Why BanglaFineType?

Typography shapes how we read, learn, and communicate.

Millions of people read and write Bangla every day, yet the tools and practices needed for refined Bangla typography—especially in scholarly, scientific, technical, and educational publishing—remain comparatively underdeveloped.

BanglaFineType exists to study these challenges, build practical solutions, document what we learn, and make the results openly available.

The four pillars

Good typography emerges when imagination, disciplined practice, evidence, and implementation work together.

Art

We pursue beauty, expression, harmony, and a visual language appropriate to the Bangla script.

Craft

We refine details through care, experience, iteration, and respect for the traditions of type and bookmaking.

Science

We study readability, perception, proportion, and typographic behavior through research, measurement, and experimentation.

Engineering

We turn ideas into dependable fonts, keyboard layouts, LaTeX packages, publishing tools, and reproducible workflows.

Current projects

A lasting typographic ecosystem is built one carefully documented component at a time.

Visual identity

Status: Active

Developing the BanglaFineType identity as an open, geometric, and reproducible typographic system.

TeX-Bengali keyboard layout

Status: In development

Designing and documenting an efficient keyboard layout for Bangla writing in TeX-oriented and general computing workflows.

LaTeX packages

Status: Planned

Building accessible LaTeX support around open Bangla typefaces, including Noto Bengali and GNU Free Bengali.

Mathematical typesetting

Status: Research

Investigating the technical and typographic requirements of mathematics-rich Bangla documents.

Documentation

Status: Active

Recording design decisions, implementation methods, maintenance practices, and submission workflows.

Website

Status: Active

Creating a public home for the project's software, research, notes, publications, and community.

Roadmap

Research, development, and community-building converge in a long-term goal: excellent scholarly publishing in Bangla.

  • Visual identity Establish a coherent and reproducible project identity.
  • Website foundation Create a durable public platform for the project.
  • Documentation Explain methods, decisions, and maintenance practices.
  • Keyboard layout Develop and distribute practical Bangla input tools.
  • LaTeX packages Make high-quality Bangla typesetting easier to use.
  • Font research Study form, proportion, readability, and font technology.
  • Scholarly publishing Apply the accumulated research and tools to books, articles, educational materials, and mathematics-rich publications.

Open by design

Knowledge grows when it is shared.

Whenever possible, BanglaFineType will make its software, design sources, documentation, experiments, and publishing workflows openly available and openly licensed.

Openness allows others to inspect the work, learn from it, improve it, adapt it, and carry its methods into other languages and writing systems.

Design notes

Good typography deserves careful explanation.

Design notes will document the reasoning behind BanglaFineType's visual, technical, and editorial decisions.
